Moving day will be here before you know it, but are you ready? If you have never moved before, or it has been a long time, you will be surprised at how much there is to do. Read on to for some tips on how to get ready for this big day.
- Make a checklist. While this seems obvious, very few people make a moving day checklist and prefer to do things as they occur to them. The best way to make a moving checklist is to do it in your computer so that you can change it, update it and email it.
- Talk to your landlord. You will have to sort out your security deposit and make sure your lease is satisfied. Talking to your landlord about your move will save you a lot of hassle on your moving day. This is true whether you’re in a home environment or office.
- Talk to your utility company. You may want to cancel your utilities or transfer them to another address. You may also have a deposit you need to get back.
- Change your address with the post office. If you get any mail, it will need to go to a different address. This is important, because you may get unexpected mail in the future that you may need – like tax information from your employer.
- Get the proper moving supplies. You can’t just go to the local grocery store and pick up some cardboard boxes and packing tape to move your personal belongings. Talk to a removalist company and get the sturdy boxes that will keep your items safe and from getting damaged.
- Decide whether you want to hire professional removalists or just hire a truck. If you have a lot of friends and not many belongings, you may just want to hire a truck. In this case, you will have to reserve the truck and make sure your friends are available. If not, then you will want to talk to a professional removalist company to help you on your moving day.
- Buy trash bags and start throwing things you don’t want away. It is extremely costly to move items and other things that you don’t need. Throw away old magazines, broken furniture and other items that are collecting dust. Take other things like old clothing and exercise equipment to a charity store. You will save a lot of time and expense if you let these items go before your moving day.
- Clean out your refrigerator and pantry. There will be many food items in your kitchen cabinets and your refrigerator that you will not eat. Throw these food items away as soon as possible and don’t buy anything that you are not going to eat before the move. As well, throw out all old toiletries and prescriptions before your moving day.
- Make arrangements for your pets in advance. Your pets may need special arrangements depending on when and how you move. This may require more effort than just loading them up in the removal truck and taking them with you. Remember, your pet has no idea what is going on.
- Count on some things to go wrong. There may be bad weather, some friends may not show up, or you may get behind schedule for other reasons. These things happen. Moving day is a tense time for everyone. On moving day, one of the most important things to be prepared for is staying calm if something doesn’t go as planned.
